Step By Step Guide To A Beautiful Umrah

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage that serves as a form of worship to Allah (SWT), following the guidance of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his Sunnah. Unlike the Hajj, which is a major pilgrimage, Umrah is referred to as a ‘minor pilgrimage.’ It can be performed at any time throughout the year and holds significant value and merit in the eyes of Allah (SWT).

Here are some of the benefits of Umrah:

    1. A way to get rid of poverty as Allah blesses you with wealth as you have dedicated to pleasing your Lord.

    1. You become a guest of the Almighty, the Eternal Absolute, Allah.

    1. Cleanse your soul and body from the burden of past sins as you ask for forgiveness.

    1. Every step of your journey works in strengthening your Iman and bringing you closer to Allah.

The Umrah consists of four main components:

    1. Ihram Ihram involves making the formal intention to perform Umrah. To enter Ihram, one must change into specific garments and perform a purification bath (ghusl), symbolizing the removal of impurities. Men wear the two-piece Ihram clothing, Ridaa and Izaar, while women wear clothing that covers their body and head. Even women who are menstruating or postpartum should perform ghusl.

After purification, the individual should pray or offer two rak’ahs of Sunnah prayer, then face the Qibla and formally enter Ihram. This should be done before traveling to Meeqat, the designated area near Makkah. Use of perfume is forbidden during Ihram.

At Meeqat, the pilgrim should declare their intention and say:

“Labbayk Allaahumma bi ‘Umrah”

(Here I am, O Allah, for ‘Umrah)

Then recite the Talbiyah:

“Labbayka Allaahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk. Inna al-hamd wa’l-ni’mata laka wa’l-mulk, laa shareeka lak”

(Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner).

It is recommended to continue reciting the Talbiyah until the Tawaaf.

    1. Tawaaf (Circumambulation) Upon entering Masjid al-Haram, the pilgrim should enter with the right foot and recite:

“Bismillaah wa’l-salaatu wa’l-salaam ‘ala Rasool-Allaah. Allaahumma ighfir li dhunoobi waftah li abwaab rahmatika. A’oodhu Billaah il-‘Azeem wa bi wajhih il-kareem wa bi sultaanih il-‘qadeem min al-Shaytaan il-rajeem” (In the name of Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, forgive my sins and open the gates of Your mercy. I seek refuge with Allah the Almighty and His noble Countenance and eternal power from the accursed Satan).

The pilgrim may touch the Black Stone (Hajr e Aswad), ideally with the right hand and kiss it. If touching is not possible, one can gesture towards it and say “Allahu Akbar.” The Tawaaf involves making seven circuits around the Ka’bah, keeping it on the left side. Avoid touching the Ka’bah’s cloth to prevent invalidating Ihram due to its perfume.

During Tawaaf, men should keep their right shoulder uncovered (Idtibaa) and walk briskly in the first three rounds (raml). After completing the seven rounds, the pilgrim should perform two rak’ahs of prayer behind Maqam e Ibrahim or anywhere in the mosque, reciting Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rak’ah and Surah Al-Ikhlaas in the second. Then, return to touch the Black Stone if possible.

    1. Saa’i (Walking) between Safa and Marwah Next, head to the area for Saa’i and when approaching Safa, recite:

“Verily, As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the Symbols of Allah” (Surah Baqarah:158) and “Nabda’u bima bada’a Allaah bihi” (We start with what Allah started).

Climb Safa to a point where the Ka’bah is visible, face the Ka’bah, and make supplications. Repeat the supplication three times as follows:

“Laa ilaaha ill-Allah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk, wa lahu’l-hamd, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer. Laa ilaaha ill-Allah wahdah, anjaza wa’dah, wa nasara ‘abdah, wa hazamaa al-ahzaaba wahdah” (There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; His is the Dominion, all praise is due to Him, and He is able to do all things. There is no god but Allah alone; He fulfilled His promise, granted victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone).

Descend to Marwah, running between the green markers and walking normally otherwise. Repeat this process seven times between Safa and Marwah.

    1. Shaving/Cutting Hair Finally, after completing the seven circuits, men must shave their heads or cut their hair evenly, while women should cut their hair to the length of a fingertip.

This concludes the Umrah pilgrimage. May Allah (SWT) accept your prayers and good deeds. Ameen!
